MOVING A CONTAINER IS CHEAPER THAN MANAGING THE INFORMATION RELATING TO ITS TRANSPORT 2015-07-30 Managing the information associated with the transport of containers costs twice as much than physically move them, says the Maersk Line. The Danish company, world number one in shipping containers, underlines that the congestion of ports and highways are just the visible barriers to international trade. One of the barriers with higher costs is the documentation needed to transport a container from one country to another. Several studies have concluded that the costs associated with administrative barriers account for about 21% of total transportation costs while the transport itself weighs only 8%. To help solving the situation, the Maersk Line is working on a project called Information Shipping Pipeline (SIP) which, in basic terms, will serve as a digital platform (as if it was a Google Drive) in which logistics operators, carriers and the various authorities may upload, access and share all necessary information on the movement of goods. |
