![]() 2017-02-24 According to the Government, by 2026, the handling of containers at the port of Leixões is expected to grow by 73%, from the current approximately 600,000 TEU, in accordance with the Strategy to Increase Port Competitiveness objectives. The Minister of the Sea has been at the Cruise Terminal just a few days ago to present the objectives and investments foreseen in the Strategy for the Port of Leixões. Overall, direct investments of 430 million euros (mostly private) and a 44% increase in cargo handling are expected for the next ten years. Regarding the handling of containers, Ana Paula Vitorino announced the reconversion of the South Container Terminal (43.4 million euros) and the construction of the new -14 meters’ terminal (320 million euros, with completion planned for 2025). In the opportunity, the Minister of the Sea emphasised the fact that TCL has been working, in the last years, to the limit of its capacity, without loss of competitiveness. Summarising, the government leader said that anticipates for Leixões the increasingly role of a gateway port, serving a hinterland extended to the north and centre of the peninsula. |
