2017-02-01

The port of Leixões closed the year of 2016 with a total of 18.25 million tonnes handled, which represented a decline of 2.7% against the absolute record of 2016.

The containerised cargo stood out, growing by 6%, or almost 400,000 tonnes, to 6.38 million tonnes. The second best result ever.

Container handling increased 5.6%, year-on-year, to 658,672 TEU, coming close to the record of 666,689 TEU in 2014.

In strong growth, and also with the contribution of TCL, was the handling of ro-ro cargo: it grew by 18.9% and exceeded 838,000 tonnes.

Fractional bulk cargo increased 4.5%, to 1.19 million tonnes.

On the other hand, liquid bulk declined by 10.8%, to 7.45 million tonnes (mainly by disruption of the oceanic single buoy for maintenance works), and solid bulk fell by 7.3%, to 2.38 million tonnes.
